An appeal to everybody :

Hi,

About 8 million children in India are denied their basic right to education. With the Right to Education Act making education free and compulsory, we must now join hands to help these children exercise this right.

UNICEF has started a movement Awaaz Do that provides us a platform to ensure that no child in this country is denied his/her basic right to education. Pledge your support to the cause.

To join the cause,

Just last week, I was teaching a young Koren girl English. It had been a really hard past year teacher her because she understood everything I said but refused to speak! One day during class she grabs a Koren book from the shelf and started reading. Slowly I told her to put down the book because it was time for class. Of course she refused. Taking the book out of her hands, she angrily protested. "But teacher, I want to read my book, I love books and I really want to read it!" I was shocked. That was the first time I had heard her speak a full sentence without my making her. For the next hour or so we talked about books and what kind of books she liked. She then read her book and then explained it to me in English so I would know what it was about. It was an amazing class and it made me feel like I am/was making some progress. =]

Back in 2004, I had a class with 5 people, two from Japan, 1 from Usa, one from Ucraina and one from Germany. I was teaching some action verbs and to do that I had to let them understand the verb "dormire" (=to sleep)...as only one understood English, I had to mime the verb...so instead of doing the gesture or some noise, I literally put myself on the floor with eyes closed and my students told me the verb "morire" (=to die)...I had to laugh a lot!

My best moments were back in 1996 in Tunisia. It was my first day at school with grade 11 ...I was so confused and in a state of shock to see the huge number of the students(34) how can I manage myself with them...I didn't have a teacher book so I started with teaching everything except what I was asked to do in the manual the 2 hours-lesson was an eternity.I was finally saved by the bell.Till now when I remember these moment I smile
