Teaching With Games

“Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand.”

Chinese Proverb

I’m sure many of you have heard this proverb before, it has been an inspiration for involved teachers around the world. Teachers who want to move beyond just telling their students information but helping them interact with knowledge, understand it completely and, most importantly, enjoy the learning process.

Sometimes, however, it can be difficult to really engage student learning and involve them in the concepts being taught.

One method of student involvement I continuously turn to is the use of classroom games. Rich games students are completely engaged in while learning and using new concepts to improve their knowledge. I’m convinced that there is a game to teach every concept, all the games may not exist yet but they soon will if I have my way!

Games work because of people’s intrinsic need to compete or complete some kind of challenge, this is a concept I would like to explore in more detail. I do know that some students in my class will stare out the window during written work but will completely immerse themselves in a game that teaches the same concept. The urge in children, and adults, to partake in some kind of game is so strong that, even if there is no material reward, the motivation to be successful will push them forward.

If you would like to explore some classroom games and their potential for engagement in learning have a look at this site: www.richgamesforlearning.com

I have compiled a collection of excellent games, which I have used and found invaluable for teaching my own class. Many of these I have come up with myself to teach specific concepts and have continued to play some of the class favourites throughout the year.

Behavior

Hi my name is Alexis,
I am a 5th grade teacher so I know all about behavior. If you need advice I am here to help. Here are a couple Ideas that help me alot. You could use a color chart. If a child is bad you have them go to yellow(every child starts on green and use closepins with the childs name on it for chart) then if they are bad again they go to orange and then red. Each color should have its own punishment such as DETENION, 5 MIN. OFF PLAY TIME, PHONE CALL TO PARENTS OR WHATEVER. Another way is marbles. Every day the class is good you put 5 marbles in and once you fill the whole can up they ALL get a prize such as a PIZZA PARTY, PJ DAY, OR ICE CREAM PARTY SOMTHING FUN! However if the behavior is bad they lose marbles. Those are two Ideas for you. Any questions or commets? Write your questions or commets on my wall or somthing thanks. Hope this helped.

FREE Online Peace Education Resources

Jeremy Gilley founded the non-profit organization Peace One Day in 1999 as part of his quest to establish the first ever day  of global ceasefire and nonviolence.  In 2001 the UN passed a resolution declaring September 21 the International Day of Peace, Peace Day, and since then Jeremy and Peace One Day have been working hard to institutionalize the day.  As part of this, the education department has come up with a FREE online resource

that provides 21 lesson plans and 28 classroom activities for exploring issues such as: ending bullying, conflict resolution, intercultural cooperation, the United Nations, and the link between sustainability and peace. Using September 21, Peace Day, as the focus, the resource works in conjunction with the documentary film The Day After Peace, which charts Jeremy Gilley’s (founder of Peace One Day and director of the film) journey to establish the first annual day of global ceasefire.  A classroom version of the film is available FREE online along with the Resource, and the Resource itself contains a wealth of video clips.

Each lesson plan refers to National standards and fits well within the frameworks of History/Social Studies, Civics and Government Studies, English/Language Arts, Environmental Science and more. To find out more about the Educational Resource and to show your students what young people can do to make peace, please go to:http://www.peaceoneday.org/en/education.  Register now!

The Resource is also available in the 6 official languages of the UN: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, Russian, and Spanish.

Please do not hesitate to contact me and let me know what you think!

A Substitute Teacher's Morning

1. Prepare some nourishing and non-spillable food and drink for the day.

Do not include nuts of any kind.

The percentage of children allergic to nuts, is very high and not worth the risk.

Even having a small amount of nuts on your hands could pose a serious health

risk to some children.

2. Arrive at school by 8.00am. There may or may not be alot of preparation, so

it’s good to get a head start, just in case.
